Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a wonderful learning community here to serve children of all needs and capabilities. The students in our school are amazing kids who face extreme challenges in and outside of the classroom due to high poverty.
Many of our students are the first in their family to graduate high school.
Just 8% of students are considered ready for college in Mott Haven, where virtually all the residents are black or Latino and 85 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
I am very proud to be their School Counselor. I want to give them the best opportunity to succeed.
My Project
Too often students will come into my office and say, "Ms. do you have any snacks?!" "I didn't get to eat breakfast." "I'm falling asleep in class." "Our lunch period is so late in the day."
Having healthy snacks in my office to give to hungry students can make a world of difference in student focus, concentration, mood, and overall well being.
Many students come to school hungry. They have responsibilities at home and often do not have time to eat breakfast. I want to have healthy snacks to give to students to help them alleviate the hunger. They can then work to their full potential instead of feeling the pains of hunger. A healthy snack can make a healthy student.
Hungry students cannot focus on their work. Having access to a healthy snack can boost their blood sugar, help alleviate their hunger and allow students to concentrate better in their classes. A fed student is a happy student.
