Children are hands-on learners. It is essential that teachers can provide their students with materials that allow them to learn in ways that meet their various unique needs. Children need a chance to experiment as they learn.
We are an extremely diverse school in the metro Detroit area.
Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and family structures. Some children have unstable home lives and are homeless while others have all of their needs met. For some of my students, our school is their first structured educational environment, while other students have previous experiences in different settings.
My Project
Little kids are constantly growing. When at school I often heard, "Ms. Dallmann I'm hungry," or "When is lunch?" Now that we are not physically in our school and classroom I wonder what these same children who depended on the school for their daily breakfast, snacks, and lunch are doing.
With the loss of daily contact with their friends, teacher, and school I do not want them to lose the security of food and snacks either.
The oatmeal, cereal, breakfast bars, ramen and soup will provide them with solid lunch and breakfast choices. The goldfish crackers and granola bars will give them a little treat and snack during the day to keep their spirits up as they work on their school activities at home during this time of upheaval. Providing this food will not only give food stability for a bit but also show the children there are still people looking out for them and care for them even when they are not physically at school when I drop it off at their homes. Having a full belly will allow the kids to be able to focus on their school work instead of where their next meal is coming from.
I will have all of this food shipped to me at my home. Then I will split up the large boxes and distribute the food to the families that need the food based on highest need determined my me and my principal.
