Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Reading Specialist, in a Title I school, in a large city an hour north of New York City. All of the students in my school qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Many students come to kindergarten already in need of literacy intervention services. Our reading classroom is home to a robust group of students from all different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
My students are hard-working, eager, and ready to learn!
They are currently distance learning from home. Some have district supplied Chromebooks and hot spots. Many do not have reliable internet or technology. If they are receiving services from me, they are already at least one grade level behind in reading.
Reading is not easy for many of my students, so they do not enjoy it. I strive to make their learning time with me as fun, efficient, and productive as possible. I hope to help foster a love of reading within my students to encourage lifelong readers!
My Project
Please help support my students in their distance learning by giving them access to healthy snacks. The snacks can boost their energy level for learning. Healthy snacks enable students to become more engaged. It is so hard to focus if you are hungry. The snacks can help keep the students alert while engaging them in our vigorous curriculum.
By providing the students with healthy snacks, I'm investing in higher academic performance.
As we are learning to navigate our “new normal”, I am trying to make learning just as interactive and engaging as it was in the classroom. They have all gone through major changes to their daily routines and what they considered "normal". These snacks are essential in helping to maintain their focus and refueling their bodies to learn! The variety of snacks in this project are different snacks that my students have mentioned they enjoy.
