My students need books that fuel their love for reading, they especially enjoy Goosebumps and graphic novels as well as puzzles (and puzzle mats) for educational brain breaks!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In 2017-2018, I will be a second year 4th grade teacher at a charter school in Kansas City. My school is in a rough area of town with 99% free/reduced lunch. Our students have little to nothing at home, so I want to make my classroom as comfortable as possible.
My students have told me things like, I got to sleep in a bed last night, or we do not have electricity because my mom can't pay the bill.
Hearing those things from 4th graders really pulls at my heartstrings and makes me realize why I do what I do.
My Project
I am requesting classroom library books because research is showing that we are killing students love for reading. Yes, my students know what "level" they are reading at. Yes, they meet in small groups and discuss texts that help them grow as a reader. But when it comes to selecting a book from the classroom library for their independent reading, it is close to impossible. But these books don't interest them.
I am also requesting puzzle mats because my students LOVE to do puzzles.
Puzzles provide so many benefits to students, and they love doing them. However, there is nothing worse than starting a puzzle during our brain break time, not finishing, and having to put it back in the box. The puzzle mats are very important so our students can continue to work on the larger puzzles day after day.
