Creative and busy--that's a typical day. I only get one hour and a half with each of my three classes a day. By the end of the year, I want all of my students to achieve their academic potential and learn science by completing hands-on activities.
My students are eager to learn, eager to work, and eager to become scientists.
Our school is blessed to have over 800 neighborhood children as well as many military children from our local Air Force Base. In fact, our school enrollment includes 32%, military students.
Since our school has such a great reputation because of our high academic expectations as well as receiving an "A" rating from our state department, we are a highly desired location for military families that get stationed at our local military base. The school population is also multi-cultural with students coming from many different ethnic backgrounds.
But everything is not all rosy, and there is a growing population of lower economic students who are attending our school. They require interventions to be successful and exposure to a wide variety of science activities to encourage each student's success.
My Project
My students would benefit from having additional food in our classroom and snack packs to take home on the weekends. These children are growing so fast at this stage. They are simply hungry some days and need more to eat. It is very hard for the students to focus if they have a grumbling tummy. I have found that having food on hand means they can satisfy their hunger and move on to being successful students in my Social Studies and Science classes.
Students from a variety of homes and family makeups come to school hungry each day.
I desire to have a classroom where students know they can ask for a morning or midday snack, or even a weekend take-home pack when their home may have limited choices.
