Help me give my students a chance to focus on learning without hunger pangs interfering.

The students at my school are a diverse group of young adults that have persevered through numerous challenges to get to their current position. For many, comprehensive school has proven to be more challenging than productive for learning. Several have been labeled as troubled, defiant, or problematic when it comes to behavior concerns. Academically, most are off-track for graduation due to not having enough credits and being over aged. From the outside looking in, these factors would have individuals believing the chance of success for a student coming with this baggage is slim to none. As an educator in an alternative school, these circumstances are not seen as negatives, but as an opportunity. The opportunity to provide students with equal access to the same resources available to students attending comprehensive schools. The same programs that will inspire them to persue the career that best suits their needs despite being told they never be able to achieve it. No matter the socio-economic status, every student deserves the chance to learn and become the best version of themself. It is my goal to provide every opportunity possible to our students to expand their access to equitable learning.
Asking students to learn while their stomachs are grumbling makes as much sense as filling up a buck with multiple holes in it. Information goes and pours right out even faster. With snacks on hand to give students, another hurdle is removed that would prevent a student from focusing on the instruction due to lack of food. As school, the focus is on the "whole child". Ensuring that academics are not the only focus, providing the small things that will keep a student loved, cared, and protected is the bare minimum we can do as school.
