My students need granola bars, fruit snacks, goldfish, nuts, and juice packs in order to help them stay focused, attentive, and to boost and maintain their stamina in class.
As a teacher in a high needs school, I know first-hand that many of my students' basic needs are not met on a daily basis. A lot of my students live in poverty. Violence, trauma, family hardship and homelessness are very real for them. Despite our best efforts to teach our students about taking care of themselves and always trying their hardest, it’s often pointless because they come to school hungry. In our school, more than 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, however, it’s a long time between breakfast and lunch, and when they leave us at 2:20 pm and return to us at 7:10 am the next morning.
We are a Title I school, which is considered high poverty.
Students at our school live in a variety of difficult circumstances, including poverty, trauma, homelessness, violence, and family hardship. Often times, these situations make it difficult for our kids to cope and manage themselves and their emotions.
Despite these circumstances, our staff and students work together to create a place where students can thrive, feel loved, belong, and receive tools to help them be successful, both emotionally and academically.
My Project
My students have a desire for knowledge and learning new ideas. But they're also hungry. My goal is to build a classroom supply of healthy snacks to help my students stay focused, attentive, and energetic. Many of my students experience malnutrition or food insecurity issues at home. As a result, at school, they are often tired and need nutrition to boost and maintain their stamina in classes.
Usually, when my students are off-task, distracted, sleepy or unmotivated, it comes down to whether or not they ate breakfast that day.
Too many of my students even go without both breakfast and lunch, which means that for much of the day they are running on empty. I currently try to make snacks available, but it's difficult and costly to keep up this service along with purchasing other supplies for my classes. Healthy snacks such as granola bars, goldfish, nuts, juice boxes, and fruit packs will enable students to develop their academic skills with renewed energy.
Your donation to this project will give students "Fuel 4 Learning." In order for students to perform well in school, they need the strength to make it through a long school day.
Your help in providing my students with healthy snacks will be instrumental in setting them up for success!
