My students are fun-loving, thoughtful, and creative! They are always looking for ways to invent their own games and enjoy the little things whenever they can. My students work as hard as they can each and every day... they also like to play as hard as they can each and every day!
Our school is in a city in Central New York, which means we get a lot of cold, wintery weather for almost five months of our year!
This means we spend at least half of our school year with recess indoors. My co-teacher and I teach in a low-income area and many of our families are unable to help us to stock our classroom with indoor recess games or activities.
We have a wonderful group of students and we love them like family. We want them to have the chance to enjoy recess all year round, weather it is wintry and cold OR sunny and warm!
My Project
Our students have an extended school day, which means we are in school for 8 hours a day. These kids use all of their brain power during those academic hours of the day.
Recess is a major part of our school day because our students get the chance to move around and release some energy, enjoy some time with their classmates, and take a "brain break" from our long day.
Often times our indoor recess time is spent with students choosing to one of the few options: sharing one of our seven computers to play educational games, drawing or coloring, and/or quizzing each other with math flashcards. These materials would give more options for those five months of the school year we spend inside for recess. All of these new activities and games will give us healthy and favorable alternatives to the mad rush at the computers!
If we had these materials for indoor recess, my students would be able to get those same amazing benefits as they do during outdoor recess!
