The school I teach in is a diverse, unique, and a special school. Our school houses over 400 students from pre-school up through 6th grade. The school I work at is a Title I school with over 86% of our students receiving a free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is considered a cluster school, which means that we support students who enter our country and are placed in our district. We usually have over a hundred refugees come to our school yearly. Our students thrive on the diversity and multiculturalism that is influenced and felt in our school. We accept, we grow, and we learn from one another.
We come from a very low socio-economic status.
Many of our students lack the resources and support that are needed to continue their learning at home. My students hunger for knowledge, expression, and to learn more about diversity and the world through new lenses that we cannot always provide. I cannot wait to supply my students with new literacy that will spark their curiosity, connect them personally, and give them a foundation in which to grow and respond.
My Project
The new novel, "Front Desk," is a new and engaging book for 6th graders. It is about a young girl who helps work at a motel that her parents who are immigrants from China work and live at. Together, the young girl and her parents help and hide Chinese immigrants. This book is about acceptance, empathy, social justice, and a book that my students can connect with.
This book will allow my students to see the challenges and journey others face and how they overcome struggles with a positive attitude.
It will give my students a new perspective and deepen empathy while accepting one's culture and uniqueness.
