The cost of three presentations by the Marine Science Institute and one by the Insect Discovery Lab is $568, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
I teach 20 first graders in East Palo Alto. Most of the students are English language learners and come from low-income families. I try and expose my students to experiences that they would not normally have. Although they live very close to the San Francisco Bay (some less than a mile), many of the students have never been there. In addition, many rarely leave East Palo Alto. Moreover, most of my students consider non-domesticated animals "gross" or "yucky." I want to change that mindset into one that thinks "interesting" or "wow" when faced with something or someone new. I would like to invite two different organizations to bring animals to our classroom--the Marine Science Institute in Redwood City and the Insect Lab from San Francisco. The Marine Science Institute brings various sea creatures from the Bay to the classroom. Students are able to observe and touch the animals. The Insect Lab brings various insects, local and exotic, to the classroom. Students are able to touch and hold the insects. Through these presentations, my students would learn more about the world they live in and gain a greater appreciation and curiosity for different animals.
