Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students come to us with such curiosity as to what it means to program a computer. Over the course of four years, some students become the hard core 10,000 line coders, others focus more on design and try to imagine new ways to infuse technology into our lives, while others find that though they like computers this is not the field for them. Regardless of what route a student takes, they all leave with a foundation and appreciation for computer science. Sometimes students write back that something they learned in a computer class has helped them out in college or that they have decided to pursue some aspect of computer science or information systems because of their experiences in high school.
My Project
In the area of Internet of Things, the Raspberry Pi and Grove kits will enhance our classroom instruction by reducing the group size from three students per kit down to two while still maintaining separate kits in the Innovation Lab for special projects. An example of one possible special project between our CS and Engineering students is to create a 3D scanning station using an array of connected Raspberry Pis with cameras that could capture a 3D model which could then be printed on one of the Environmental Engineering CTE’s 3D printers.
The allure of Virtual & Augmented Reality cannot be understated.
The application of these two technologies beyond video games amazes our students. An Innovation Lab equipped with a powerful computer and an Oculus Rift S will allow students to explore Virtual & Augmented Reality.
In addition to our CS students, the 3D modeling aspect of Virtual & Augmented Reality can serve to inspire our Digital Art and Design students to explore careers in these fields.
During this historic school year of social distancing and remote learning we will attempt to empower students by mailing or picking up at the school, Internet of Things kits which include the Raspberry Pi along with additional components from our school stock. In a similar fashion we will attempt to distribute the Google Cardboard VR Headsets which will allow students to explore and learn how to create immersive Virtual Reality environments. We will have a small group of students attending in person learning at the school. These students will have the benefit of exploring the other resources in PwC Innovation Lab project.
