Ms. Annaromao from Milwaukee WI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books that are specifically geared toward their goals of moving from life as traumatized children who struggle throughout the school day to the resilient learners they are capable of being.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students range from 2nd to 6th grade with reading levels from K to 6th and vocabulary skills from 1st to high school levels. They make up a self-contained comprehensive behavioral unit related to their lagging social, emotional, and behavioral skills which has had negative impact on their acquisition of academic skills.
My students are heroes.
They've survived much trauma in their young lives. They're still standing and they still show up for school. Trauma in tow, they bring much love and a hunger to learn with them as well.
These books will be used by the students to give them both scientific and imaginative understanding of how the brain works. We will be using these books along with many other activities to learn about mind/body connections and how those impact the emotions they struggle to regulate and the academic tasks they are trying to achieve. In addition, some books provide role models for not giving up and ways to cope with challenges.
We'll be working as a class to incorporate a growth mindset to help learn the tools to stay calm in the face of adversity and to know why they can believe in themselves.
They can believe in themselves because they know they have a brain. With these books and our activities, they will know how the brain works. They will know how that's related to their bodies and how their bodies interact with their brains. This knowledge is fundamental to a growth mindset that says they might not be there...yet, but they will, with practice and perseverance, become resilient learners!
