Hello! I am a counselor at a public school in Hunter's Point in San Francisco, CA. As you may know, our students are primarily from low-income families and live in the projects that surround our school. Many of them have never been beyond their neighborhood, much less to a college campus. Please help our students become excited about going to college!
The vast majority of our students have never been encouraged to think about going to college and have never been exposed to the college culture. In some cases they have been told that they will never go to college. Our school wants to change that! We believe that instilling the message that they ARE college material from an early age will directly impact their goals for the future. We've already taken many of our students to visit college campuses around the Bay Area. We can already see that this is making a difference!
Our entire school will participate in this project. Students will be asked to keep a spiral notebook as a "College Journal" to record their thoughts about being a college-bound scholar. We are requesting your support to purchase 200 spiral notebooks for our students (40 sets of 5 pack notebooks). We are also very supportive of students who would like to pursue a non-traditional college experience such as a culinary academy or trade school. We realize that not every student will want to pursue a four-year college experience but we want them to plan for their post high school education, whatever that may look like.
Without support and the unwavering message to our students that they CAN go to college and WILL go to college, they will not come to see this as an option for themselves. Our school must take on what many of us had in the home: support and love and encouragement of our students to reach their dreams. Please help us!!!
