It's not every day that a special group of students become an integral part of your life, but my students this year have become especially near and dear to me. Although I've lost 4 students to mobility/housing issues and gained 4 new ones who may not stay very long, my students love and support each other.
Mobility issues usually mean one thing - these students have very real struggles and are moved around usually by the whims and desires of their parents.
Despite these issues, I have not seen a group of students that cares more deeply about each other's success than this one.
Many people do not know what a Title I school is or means. Typically, it means that students do not have enough money to eat school lunch. It also implies that parents typically have lower incomes than other areas and, unfortunately, it also means parents have 2-3 jobs trying to make ends meet. This, in turn, creates latch-key children who have little or no parental supervision.
For these, and other reasons, I need to get good books into their hands.
My Project
The books/novels my school has are falling apart in the hands of my students. Old copies of books do little to motivate students. My students need new novels so I don't end up taping over tape to try to get them to hold together for another year. They won't make it even for another week.
My students deserve good books; ones that are new, not dilapidated.
I want books in the hands of my students and I want them to read 1 novel each month. These books will propel us into our journey of reading and writing. Some titles are: The Cay, Banner in the Sky and more.
Additionally, we need some fun, science-related manipulative items to encourage questioning and observation. The magnetic (Bucky Balls) have engaged my students greatly.
