My students need a field trip to the Museum of Science in Boston, Massachusetts so they can experience the science and mathematics curriculum hands-on.
We are a Title I Middle School full of diversity with almost 40% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. With many of our students being raised in poverty, school is often the only place some of them feel safe and secure. Many of our students are being raised by Grandparents, single parents struggling to get by, and within families that are stretched too thin both financially and emotionally. For these students, school offers the opportunity to be free from worry, even if for only a few hours each day. Sadly, the only healthy relationships many of our students have in their lives are the bonds with teachers and counselors from our school.
Despite the struggles that our students face, they come to school with a willingness to learn and explore each day.
They tackle learning with an enthusiasm that is both inspiring and refreshing. As teachers, we try to give our students the best opportunities to engage in the curriculum. We offer great project based learning, collaborative work with peers, and fun activities for students who struggle to access the standards.
My Project
This field trip will enhance our students' learning and keep them engaged in school. Many of our students will never have the opportunity to experience Boston or a world renown Science Museum. Also, this trip is going to provide our students with a much needed reprieve from State Testing while still having an educational experience.
Going to the Science Museum will give students a chance to take the knowledge they have learned in the classroom and see how it applies to the real world.
They will see learning as an exciting experience and be more engaged in the curriculum. Also, they will be able to have fun with their friends while learning and build better relationships with the teachers in their lives.
