First graders love books! My class is no exception! One of the most beneficial learning times in our day is our small group guided reading. You can make this time even better!
I teach first grade in a school that proudly serves students from many different cultures and backgrounds.
There are students that speak fluently in other languages that know only some or little English, students from varied family situations, and students with special needs. The best thing that I have found to bring them all together is a good book!
My Project
I am requesting eight sets of books, with five books in each set. These books are in the Rookie Reader series, which are at an appropriate instructional level for most first graders. With an increase focus on testing, I have set a goal to expose my first graders to more nonfiction reading material. Each day I read with small groups in my class. Having these sets of books will allow us to do small group reading while learning about interesting science and social studies topics, such as Africa, President's Day, and more.
These books will not only be used by my first graders, but will also be shared with 3 other first grade teachers and their students.
Students need high interest, appropriate reading materials to keep the reading excitement high.
These materials will help teach reading, science, and social studies. Thank you for considering our proposal!
