I teach fourth grade language arts and social studies at a Magnet School in North Carolina. I believe children's literature is the best way to show students how to write. I am requesting a grant to purchase books that demonstrate features of writing. Writing is always difficult for students at this level, and the more tools we can give them, the easier the process becomes. These pieces of children's literature will provide real world examples of the writing features we teach in fourth grade. The features include focus, organization, style, conventions and support and elaboration. These books will be used in direct teaching lessons with the students and for reference materials while they are writing. The books will be available for a student having difficulty with focus, or organization, to look at how a "real" author used that feature in his or her writing. I want my students, all 46 of them, to become proficient writers by the end of fourth grade. I could stand up, lecture, preach, pantomime, etc, but honestly believe nothing teaches them better than real life examples. I believe the children's literature books will assist them in seeing how these features are used and help them improve their writing skills.
