My Students

My classroom consists of 30 second grade students who come to school each day ready to learn and persevere. Our school is located in a diverse low income neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. Many of my students are refugees from war torn countries or have been displaced due to gentrification. In spite of these challenges, they arrive at school everyday ready to learn. I am truly inspired by their resilience, perseverance and love for learning.

This group of second graders have a huge desire to learn and are highly motivated despite some of the obstacles they have had to face.

This is truly an amazing group of young learners who work hard to achieve their goals.

My Project

This project is a collection of engaging books that teach students about social justice as well as titles that are just plain fun for students to read. These books will be used in our class library and will be cherished by my 2nd graders as they improve their reading skills while reading about resilient characters who represent their cultural backgrounds, families, and interests.

This collection contains many titles that are Coretta Scott King award winners.

This award is given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.

Other books in this collection are from beloved authors such and fun and engaging series. Students will love reading following the adventures of Pete the Cat and Katie Woo. These books will give our library a much needed update that will create a lifelong love of reading. Each student deserves the chance to enjoy reading high quality children's literature.
