"Keep it Real, they say, make us want to know more." My lively kids are constantly keeping me on my toes, and they are so right! I teach 11th grade English in a high needs school. My students are amazing, and always make great connections to what we are reading. We are constantly working on improving their active reading and essential writing skills so they will be successful in college and in their future.
The challenge when teaching literature is finding great books and having access to them. The students cannot go out and buy their own copies. If I want to teach a new piece of literature, we need 33 copies or a class set, so each student has their own copy of the book.
I need 33 copies of The Rooftops of Tehran. We are currently working on a Civil Rights unit in which we are learning about non-violent resistance and civil disobedience through the writings of Martin Luther King, Ghandi and more. We have had some great conversations about civil rights and the words, actions and non-actions of those we read about. I am hoping to open up the unit and take it to The Rooftops of Tehran. We will take this discussion to a whole new level by adding another layer into the mix of inequality. We will do this while exploring a fictional text to work on some of the skills of analyzing and synthesizing through reading, writing and discussion of Universal Themes.
PLEASE HELP US!! We've been working hard, my students are completely engaged in the topic and I want to keep the momentum going but I can't do it without your help! My kids are ready to explore the ideas of justice and inequality and the ways people from different cultures and times confront them. Thank you so much for your help, your contribution will have a lasting impact on my students both in my class and the future.
