Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach eighty ELL students (2nd-6th grade), yes! 80! They are a wonderful, energetic and diverse group of students who are learning oral and written English skills. I find it of high importance to teach character values in my class because it connects across cultures. This year, I have emphasized the importance of being empathetic. Research tells us that kids that learn about empathy are less likely to be antisocial or present with uncontrolled aggressive behaviors. Empathy and perspective taking, serve as an important role in personal behavior, sharing and helping others.

My English Language Learners were at a disadvantage during COVID-19 learning impact because interpersonal skills were lacking during isolation.

So much changed in a short period of time! Their favorite places to gather and call community were limited and life in the midst of a pandemic certainly sparked anxiety, frustration, fear and stress. My hope is to emphasize the warmth of community and provide them with verbal tools to show empathy, use active listening, collaboration, positive attitude and self-confidence. For such a task I need resources like books, writing tools for reflection, community building activities, and organizational spaces created in the classroom to engage all learners.

The pandemic has certainly been a social-emotional and academic challenge but I think it is a unique opportunity to understand our humanness and bring back the organic and dynamic joy of children's conversations. I look forward to providing this meaningful space!
