Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk into my classroom you don't feel like you are in a high school classroom, you feel like you have entered a community art studio. Students come in collect their supplies and materials, get their sketchbooks, and their projects and start working. I try to instill in my students they are artist when they enter the studio and students like Agape personify that idea, of the student as an artist. She is always looking for ways to express their unique abilities. Agape is creative on many different levels, she loves to sketch and create beautiful 2D illustrations of the 3D the sculptures she creates in my class. It is really important to me for my students experiment with unusual media and techniques for their sculpture projects. Many of my students have incredible ideas for jewelry and wearable sculpture. This project will give them the basic skills necessary to move forward with their ideas if they choose to. Most of my students would never have the opportunity to learn these jewelry making techniques with out the funding for this project.
This project is an intensive jewelry making experience. Each student will create a bracelet that has seven concave and/or convex layered pieces linked together. Students will design, stack, add design elements such as letters or textures, each piece before pounding the metal components into a convex or concave form.
This project is all about planning, experimentation, problem solving and trial & error. Students will have a beautiful project by following the steps of the assignment. Because metal working is totally new to them will have to think through what they are expected to do, not get frustrated if they are not successful the first try, and see the project through to the end. All of these thing are great skills for my students.
In Their Own Words
I took ceramics class for my art class to work with my hands and do stuff I have never done before, I think most students did. This project will let me experiment and use materials I never thought would be possible! My goal for this project is to combine art and math to create unique pieces of jewelry. We'll be able to learn new techniques that will help us learn how to solve problems by creating this project. By practicing how to create original sculpted designs, we will be able to expand our knowledge of what art is.
Ms. S. encourages us to be leaders in our class by helping other students. I volunteered, with some other students, to learn and practice metalworking so I could help other students to learn a different form of art that they are unfamiliar with, along with informing them about the procedure. Students can become discouraged and frustrated when learning a new set of skills, so by having other students help, everyone will take an interest in this project.
This project is important to my school community because by doing this project, students will be able to experience more than one form of art. Our school has a lack of variety in the art that students can create. Students are given a choice between drawing/painting and ceramics. Every student who enrolled in ceramics did so because they wanted to use their hands. Making something using hammers and metals is really exciting, especially after Ms. S. showed us what our projects could look like! We don't have the materials to make art out of metal, but with this project, we will be able to experiment and make something really amazing.
