Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Introducing children to different cultural events and cultures is one that is dearest to my heart. One way of doing this is to personally experience an event or a culture and bring it to the classroom to "show and tell." Another way is to bring a visitor from a different country to share cultures. We also have pen pals from Germany! To "show and tell" a trip I recently made to my home country for the first time in more than 32 years, the children had to hover around the laptop as I made a PowerPoint presentation of my trip to South Viet Nam. The same thing occurred when I went to see The Gates in Central Park. Knowing that most of my students would not be taken there, I wanted to share with them the experience by having another "show and tell". It occurred to me that having a portable projector would make the "show and tell" better for all the students, physically challenged included. I had bought a laptop so that I could share my experiences with the students since I do not have a computer in my classroom. I realized that to truly "show and tell", I would need to have a portable projector to bring the experience out of the laptop and onto the walls of the classroom! With the help of this technology I would be able to share my experiences with the whole class. This is impossible to do the technology that is currently available at our school. I am a third grade classroom teacher in an inclusion class. The school is 96% free breakfast and lunch. Our school is a barrier free school and so is my classroom. I have several students who wear braces and have a walker and a wheelchair. This is the issue with crowding around a laptop to view our "show and tell" presentations. It is difficult for them to see the presentation. Our class would benefit from having a portable projector to put the "show and tell" presentations on the classroom walls for all to see, rather than simply on their teacher's laptop where only a few to can see them. Experiencing different cultures and seeing diversity is crucial to learning growth. It makes people dream of places to go and visit and hopefully encourages some to actually do it! Putting the "show and tell" presentations on the classroom walls will make them bigger and more real and help those children who cannot move so well in the classroom to see everything! We could also use it for teaching the students how to use MSOffice, how to do research on the internet and take instructional tours on the internet as a whole class. This projector has many uses and would benefit all 17 of my students as well as the many other teachers who may want to borrow the projector for their lessons!
