As an Early Childhood Special Education teacher it is important to me that my students feel successful in all that they do on a daily basis. Many of my students face obstacles to their learning such as developmental delays, poverty, and language barriers. Luckily, this does not stop them from putting 110% effort into everything that they do.
As children enter our classroom in the morning, the first activity they do is daily journaling. At the beginning of the year, many children only “scribble scrabbled” in their journal. For many children, this was their first time using various writing utensils such as crayons, pens, and pencils. As the children became more comfortable with the writing process their drawings began to progress. This has been such an exciting process to watch! Many of the children have progressed over the year from simple “scribble” to complex drawings of daily events in their lives. Many are now able to write their whole names, dictate a simple story and write simple words in their journal! This is quite a big deal for Pre-K students especially since every child in our classroom is considered “At-Risk” or an “Early Childhood Special Education” student by Chicago Public Schools!
I would love to be able to continue the Journaling process next year and make it more exciting for the students! I envision every child (we are anticipating 40) having a journal. On the Front cover, I'd like to label every journal with the child's picture and name. This will help the child to begin to recognize their name in print. In addition, I am requesting loads of paper and brand new crayons. With journaling happening on a daily basis we are constantly refilling the journals and running low on crayons. With the help of protective binders, our journals will not be “Jurassic Journals” made from paper but will be "Journal Jewels" that will last children the entire year of school!
