Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My bright, shining stars are special to me because they are making the big transition from first grade to second grade. Many of my students are high-need. Eighty percent are low-income students who don't have enough books or help at home. Fifty percent are below or far below grade level, and five percent of them are newcomers to the country. Some of my students come to school angry or on high alert, because they come from authoritarian homes or foster homes where they are yelled at and harshly punished rather than reasoned with when they engage in a challenging behavior. Our school is an amazing place of learning filled with families of hard-working folks. I have an opportunity to work with siblings year after year, and appreciate the social emotional support from donors for these amazing students!
My Project
Many of my students need practice with self-regulation, particularly self-soothing techniques. With how unpredictable and scary the world is for many of my immigrant and newcomer students, anger and confusion are understandable. These stress relief materials would truly support my students' endeavors to calm themselves.
My students will be able to self-soothe if given these incredibly effective stress relief materials, which will help them focus more academically.
For example, squishy stress balls, finger traps, puzzle cubes, and fidget toys almost immediately change my students' moods and behavior when they are given just 10 minutes of time to calm and redirect themselves. I give my students "mindfulness" time each day, which is time when they can collect themselves and reflect on their recess. This allows them to be more focused on the academic lesson following lunch.
