In this 21st century, students are more accustomed to a visual presentation of information than any other generation. However, the beauty and importance of the written word cannot and should not be ignored. I propose to immerse my 12 special needs students in literature and reinforce the stories through the visual media; therefore, I would like to have access to a DVD player and compatible TV with a stand to allow for the opportunity to read books and then see movies made from those stories, or to read nonfiction material and then view films or documentaries about the related information. Using the genre of fiction, students would be able to compare and contrast the presentation of written literature to filmed stories, as well as study point of view, figurative language and other strategies that attain the NYC and NY State ELA standards. In nonfiction, students would be able to study specific content areas and then view materials related to that field (i.e., animal life, historical events, biographical data, etc.), and then continue their studies with class and individual projects that incorporate what they learned through both the written word and the filmed story. Because my school is located in a lower socio-economic neighborhood, many of my students do not have access to a variety of visual media; I believe that this would be a valuable opportunity for them to expand their knowledge.
