My 2nd graders are truly special! Our class fluctuates in size, but consistently there are about 26 students. We are a school family; school is a safe and nurturing environment.
Our school is diverse and rich in culture.
Most of our students are on free and/or reduced lunch programs. They come to school ready to learn and are safe, respectful, responsible and hardworking. The majority of our students are not exposed to agriculture or don't understand where our food and fiber comes from. My passion, having grown up in a farming family, is to educate and intertwine the knowledge of how our food is grown, the work that goes into it, and how it eventually gets into our grocery stores.
This school garden project will bridge that gap of "farm to fork" with the work of planting and maintaining a school garden and then harvesting the produce. We may get our hands a bit dirty, but we will learn by doing!
My Project
We've got our school garden up and growing! We've planted a variety of lettuces and vegetables. Now, it's time to begin harvest and reap the rewards of our hard work. We will be bringing the project full circle, from farm to fork. We want to provide our school community with school-grown produce, fresh from our garden beds. We will set up a mini farmers market stand using the donations from this project. The chalk board will be designed and decorated by the students, advertising what veggies are available! The produce stand will sit outside of our classroom and students will be in charge of maintaining the booth. Any money raised by the money lock box will be put towards future agricultural field trips! The money collected in the cash box will connect to our mathematical standards of counting money. This is the second phase of our "Planting Seeds for Agricultural Knowledge" project!
