Interaction and hands-on learning is key for the students in my class. They learn English and gain higher level thinking with tremendous speed when I incorporate visuals, manipulative, and real life experiences together. Working together and having fun is key to learning in my classroom.
I have 26 vivacious, curious, and eager to learn students.
They enjoy stories, playing, teamwork, and structured learning. Their parents speak a variety of languages and hands-on, visual learning is key. Vietnamese, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Tagalog are merely some of the languages spoken by my students. My school is culturally diverse, with respectful parents dedicated to their children's learning. Fellow teachers are positive and incredibly hard working. It's a very special place.
My Project
The students will use these materials to learn and study about the 21 day incubation period and life cycle of a chicken. This project will engage students in real life science. Anytime I am able to bring in hands-on activity into my classroom, I am creating opportunities for passions and interests to blossom. Students will have their own "egg journal" to document and note changes and predictions that are happening inside of the eggs. In addition, "egg"sploration (exploration) stations will be conducted to enrich the process. The build up to Day 21 is the most momentous day of first grade! I truly enjoy seeing the excitement in the faces of my students as they watch a chicken hatch from an egg. This is a full 3 weeks of hands-on, passionate learning, and engaging discussions.
I have taught this chicken life cycle unit for the past 13 years.
The incubators at my school are old, missing parts and not accurate. The past few years have led to very disappointing hatching results. With the generosity of Donors Choose, I hope to give my students hands-on learning in life science with more accurate results and positive outcome. Thank you very much for giving my students the opportunity to experience wonder, excitement, and the circle of life first hand.
