Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English language learners in a Title I public school in New York City. Most of my students come from Hispanic backgrounds where Spanish is the dominant language spoken at home. My students are always excited to learn new things. They face challenges in learning the English language, however, they have the willingness to learn and do their absolute best every day.
As an ELL teacher, I get the opportunity to work with my students for multiple years and I always love to see the growth in their academics from year to year.
My Project
A pencil is a necessity for every student. A pencil is what helps a student to write their name, the date, the problem of the day, a story of a topic they are an expert on, etc. Pencils are so frequently in use that they need to go through the sharpener on a daily basis.
Unfortunately my two electric sharpeners which I had for many years recently stopped working.
Currently the students and I are using small manual sharpeners to sharpen our pencils. Using manual sharpeners takes a lot of time and causes a mess since the pencil shavings holder is really small and sometimes the students forget to empty them out after each use.
