My students are amazing! Each day they teach me something new. I have recently transitioned to a choice-based model of art instruction and the kids are going above and beyond my expectations every day. What I love most about choice centers is that students are not just making cute art projects- they are doing real problem solving, collaborating, inventing, discovering, experimenting, and GROWING as artists!
I want to provide these young artists with a real studio experience and learning environment that supports these artistic behaviors.
My students range from grades K-8, and have an enormous range of aptitudes and abilities, and come from varied socioeconomic backgrounds.
My Project
My K-8 art classroom (once the high school auto shop) is HUGE but a little dingy and lacking adequate storage. I have spent the past few years trying to remake it into an inviting and functional workspace for all of my students by creating centers for drawing, painting, sculpting, collage, fiber arts, and technology. The new area rug will give us a fresh, clean space for gathering and the carts will provide much-needed storage in that area. After gathering for instruction and discussion, students will disperse to their chosen art centers.
The materials I have selected will help organize supplies and create functional working spaces for students.
With easy-to-read labels and clear storage bins for supplies, my students will be more independent when working in centers. Making supplies easily accessible will also increase their productivity and maximize their work time.
