My students need 20 copies of "Naked Truth: Young, Beautiful, and (HIV) Positive" and single copies of 16 other books about living with HIV and prevention.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach in the only state in America where HIV/AIDS is still on the rise. My high school students are in a battle every day to make the right choices. My school is located in a poor, rural, high risk area, where sex education is almost non-existent and STDs are spreading through the school like gossip. "African Americans face the most severe rates of HIV infection in this nation. The harsh reality is that 1 in 16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV at some point in their lifetime, as will 1 in 30 black women" according to the aids.gov website. My schools demographics are 100% African American. Most of our students who go on to college will attend a nearby college where HIV is a known epidemic. Before they get there we must prepare them.
We might like to think we could just promote abstinence and the students will take it to heart, but the truth at my school is students are making choices that put their lives at risk. The proof is in the fact that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 19 million new STD infections occur every year. And, even more alarming, is that nearly 50 percent of these new cases happen to young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Not only that, but the American Social Health Association (ASHA) reports that half of all new HIV infections occur in teenagers. It is apparent that many of the current and alarming STD statistics could be reduced with proper education.
I would like to obtain a collection of HIV and STD books for our school library. We plan to have a promotion of these books when the health classes study STDs, but we also hope to have several STD prevention programs next school year.
The more our youth know about STD prevention the better prepared they will be to make informed choices about safe sex. Please help me change my students thinking about sexual health and possibly save their lives.
