My Students
My 6th grade students (ages 11-13) started the year as less than enthusiastic readers, especially my boys. We are in a low socioeconomic area. I have 26 students, 16 of them are boys.
This makes sharing my love of reading a bit more challenging.
Most boys do not care for reading, and they are harder to reach out too. Stocking my library with books is already difficult, but finding something that all my students enjoy and will want to keep reading is even harder.
My Project
In my experience, male students are the hardest to motivate to read. It's difficult to find material that will peak their interest, let alone motivate them to keep reading if they start. I have found a solution: Manga/Graphic Novels.
I have started collecting some manga series that I am a fan of and this sparked the interest of my boys.
It started with one of my boys, who was not a reader, finishing all 45 books I have on my shelf. The others saw how much this young man had just fallen in love with these books and then they started asking me about them. Which ones did I like? Who my favorite characters were in each of the series?
Then the best question: When are you getting more of these books?
I can say, first hand, that I have noticed a difference in my boys' work, mannerisms, and attitude about schoolwork since they started reading these books. I want to make them lifelong readers and gradually bridge them from these graphic novels to regular novels and books with similar plots, character structure, etc.
