Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The library at our school is working hard to encourage our students to learn for the fun of it! The majority of our girls come from economically disadvantaged households and underrepresented groups. We recognize the need to make learning an engaging experience for our girls, and they have continually shown how committed they are to setting goals and working toward them.
With hands-on learning opportunities and activities to promote creativity and individuality, we aim to help our girls smash gender stereotypes and pave the way toward academic success.
My Project
This summer, we will be taking 5 students to Washington D.C. for the best field trip ever! This trip is something we are trying to make a tradition for our students, who very rarely have the opportunity to leave the state, let alone travel cross country to see our nation's major museums and landmarks! This will be our second trip to DC, this time with a new round of student travelers.
The purpose of this trip is to expose our students to history, art, and make them feel more independent, so that someday they may have the courage to leave our city in pursuit of higher education.
The majority of students involved in this trip are POC, so it is highly important to us that they are able to see themselves in our nation's history while on this trip. One of my most moving memories from last year's trip was visiting the National Portrait Gallery and standing in front of Barack Obama's presidential portrait. The students were awestruck, and they were so interested in the meaning of the flowers depicted as well as learning that the artist who created it is Nigerian-American.
This curriculum-aligned trip will offer many opportunities to explore history and the arts. Students will learn about the architecture on Pennsylvania Avenue and throughout DC, appreciate the craftsmanship of the First Ladies' inaugural dresses, and feel the emotions evoked by the sculpture memorials throughout the city.
We have worked hard to ensure that our students' trips are supported through our fundraising efforts and through generous donations from our community. This project will support my trip as a chaperone.
