My students are active and inquisitive 6th graders. Transitioning from childhood to young teens they are all over the place and Math is not a high priority in their vision of their worlds. In fact, many tell me they hate Math...ugh! My students are not unique in their feelings about Math. They like many others find it a difficult subject, don't see the relevance, and generally, just see it as dry and boring. But they are bright and beautiful soon to be adults and they just need a little inspiration to give Math a chance. A love or at least, like of Math can change their lives and I so want to a part of that positive change.
My Project
My busy 6th graders need stimulation - not present in the bleak Math classroom I inherited this year. Not only did the school lose everything in Harvey, but we are also still in the process of structural recovery. So funding for school supplies has not included the "non-essential" items I am requesting. And yet, I feel these things are exactly what are needed to make learning more engaging and stimulating. Math, an essential skill, is often seen as boring to students and a dull classroom isn't helping the cause. I have requested needed supplies - a binder for every student, shelves where these can be placed, inspirational wall art, calming and colorful rugs for the floors and of course, Math games and relevant activities to help me deliver the best lessons I can. Help me inspire my students by creating a magnificent math class!
