I teach a cross categorical kindergarten class in Raleigh, NC and currently have ten students. My very special students have caught Letterland Fever! What is Letterland Fever, you ask? It is a contagious desire to learn letters and sounds. The only cure is a daily dose of the most wonderful, multi-sensory, child friendly phonics program. Every afternoon, my students and I take an imaginary trip to a delightful place called Letterland where we listen to stories, sing songs and dress up in character costumes. This unique program is the perfect way to teach my special needs kindergarten students; letter names, correct letter formation and sounds.
Last year, Wake County provided every cross categorical kindergarten class with the basic Letterland materials and training. I immediately fell in love with this new curriculum and could not wait to share it with my students. Since then, I've spent a small fortune and countless hours making costumes for each character. In March, the director of Letterland, Mark Wendon, traveled across the globe and honored the class with a visit. His mother, Lyn Wendon, is the originator of Letterland. After teaching all day in England, she worked nights, at her kitchen table and created the Letterland program for her students. It is currently used in over 80 countries!
Recently, Letterland introduced a new product that I find irresistible and know would benefit my students. The first is a fabulous new software program called, Living ABC's. My students will love exploring the interactive letter scenes and learning the letter names and sounds. Plus, as they practice their new skills they are being assessed, so I can easily keep up with how the class is progressing. In addition, I am requesting the five site license so all of the classroom computers will serve as Letterland learning centers. Please partner with me and help bring the alphabet to life for some very special kids!
