My students need a writing program that develops the creativity and skills of a writer, and develops the social and ethical values of a responsible person.
The Frog-tastic Firsties love to write. We have been writing stories, poems, research reports, and everything in between all year. We also love listening to stories and talking to each other about them. We really need a writing program that has all of those learning opportunities in one place.
There are 30 Frog-tastic Firsties in our class.
We are a diverse group of kiddos. We live in a big city, in a fun, diverse neighborhood. There are many different languages spoken in our classroom. We are very energetic and excited to learn. We love frogs, especially our class mascot Freddy.
My Project
The Being a Writer program is a yearlong writing curriculum that combines two decades of research in the areas of writing, motivation, and learning theory with social and ethical development.
The program has two goals: to develop the creativity and skills of a writer, and to develop the social and ethical values of a responsible person. It uses high-quality trade books for genre immersion and author studies, and easy-to-teach mini-lessons to reinforce the skills and conventions taught in the program. Writing instruction, regular community-building elements, and guided partner work are integrated to develop in students a sense of autonomy, belonging, and competence.
I used this program at my previous school and saw unbelievable success, not only in the students' writing, but also in their reading and social skills.
I can use this donation year after year, providing the best instruction for many students.
