This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
All of my students receive free lunch and for many of them this is the only meal of the day. The school was recently taken over by the state because of the students' poor academic performance. I am a part of the team hired to turn the school culture around and to increase student achievement.
My students are intelligent and have a strong desire to be successful.
Unfortunately, the educational system has failed many of them for a long time. I have high school students that read on a fourth or fifth grade level. Most of my students do not have access to Internet or computers at home. Many of my students work, but the money they earn goes to help support their families.
My Project
I am the Chemistry teacher at our high school. I am usually the first and only lab experience my students ever have. They are always excited to complete the Chemistry labs. However, they ask me if they can dissect a frog every year. I always tell them dissection is Life Science. I explain this is a different area than Chemistry, and that the school does not have the dissection supplies. They are always very disappointed.
Last year we were funded for a DonorsChoose.org project to complete a dissection.
My students this year were very disappointed to learn that they may not be able to dissect as we do not have funds to purchase the frogs.
I know what a huge impact this experience had on me, resulting in my majoring in Biology and Chemistry. I would like to share this experience with my students. So despite being the Chemistry teacher, I would like to do a unit on Frog Anatomy that ends with a dissection project.
