Fifth grade is often very hard for many students. Students have a variety of skills to learn in their first year of "the middle school experience". I hope by using "Frindle", students will learn new skills while having fun reading a new book!
Our school population is considered to be economically disadvantaged with over 66% on the free or reduced school lunch program.
Our test scores are very good and our kids work very hard. However, we continually struggle to be able to afford the basics. I want to have enough copies of this novel, "Frindle", so that every child in the 5th grade can have one in their hand. Supplementing the curriculum by using novels is a great way to motivate students to read. This one novel can provide opportunities for me to teach multiple skills. I can teach dictionary skills, thesaurus skills, synonyms, genres, and many more skills just using this one book. I feel this book would be a fun way to start the school year and hopefully inspire kids to keep reading!!!! My experience is that by the 5th grade often students do not read as much as they should. I want them to love reading and I want to expose them to great kid friendly authors.
My Project
Having these books will put a novel into each 5th graders hands! Nothing is better than having all of your students reading! This novel is a fun and exciting way to review skills, while helping students associate with others their own age. This novel will also provide an entertaining way to review dictionary and thesaurus skills with students. It will also give them a superb example of realistic fiction which is one of the genres they will study in the 5th grade. The book will also help students understand how important characters are to a story. It will also show the effects of the characters' action on the plot. The students will be learning so many skills with this one book!!!! I will be able to teach story elements by using a story map. Students will be exposed to a variety of strategies to teach the standards with this one book.
This project is something I have worked on this summer.
I enjoy constantly updating my teaching ideas and doing new things to try to reach more students. This project will not only impact this year's students, but it will effect hundreds of students for years to come. I would love to have enough of these novels to put into all of my 5th graders' hands.
