My Students

Here in our corner of West Virginia, my fifth graders struggle with learning disabilities in reading, language, and math. While school can prove challenging for these students, many also struggle with families coping with poverty, addiction, ​and illness. I consider it a real privilege to be allowed into their lives, and they certainly live in my heart. This year I am adding an autism classroom to my resource classroom due to space and staff constraints. This has proven to be challenging and rewarding, but a strain on our resources.

At school, we work on improving skills specific to each student.

They are courageous in tackling phonics, vocabulary, and computation skills, and I love to see their joy when they realize they have mastered a new concept!

My Project

This year I am teaching resource students with Autism diagnoses as well as students with learning disabilities and health impairments. Many of these students have had trouble making meaningful connections with their teachers and their student peers. I have created a social skills class to engage students with myself and their general education teachers as well as fellow students.

Students with good social skills are the best teachers for my students who need to improve in this critical skill area.

I will use these sensory items and activities to foster a relationship between students from various grades and classes and the students in my classroom. These students bond over games and activities such as sand, bean boxes and Legos.
