Have you ever felt scared, frightened, and all alone? My class wants to offer a hand of help and friendship to those in need. We want to create a "Friendship Bench" where a child in need can go. When a child is seen sitting alone on this bench it is a sign that this child needs a friend.
Our school is located in a medium to large sized city that is approximately two hours from a major city in the United States.
The students who attend our school come from a wide variety of backgrounds. However, each year, more and more of our students are coming from a home environment that is less than ideal. These children come to us struggling for the basic needs of life, searching for answers that we cannot always provide.
Some of our students come to us not having any friends, not knowing how to make a friend and not knowing to be a friend. We have students and teachers here who are wonderful individuals who are willing to help anyone in need, but they do not always know how to offer that help or to whom to offer it. These loving caring students and teachers want the opportunity and means to help these students of need. They want these students to know that there are people here who will offer them the friendship and help they need.
My Project
The resources we are requesting will enable us to create a "Friendship Bench" where a student in need can go and we can offer that child help. By creating this bench the students who want to help others will see one way they can start to help. On the other side, the students who need the help but do not know how to ask will hopefully feel they have a safe place to go.
We hope this bench will deter bullying. We want the bullies to see this bench and know that we as people, as a class, as a school will not tolerate bullying. Sometimes children who are being bullied do not know where to go or who to ask for help. This will be their spot. They won't have to say word. We will see them and we will be there. Sometimes children have other needs and are afraid or don't know how to ask for the help they need. This will be their spot. As teachers, as students, as adults, and as fellow children, we want to be there for our students and/or peers.
We want this bench to be a safe place.
We want this bench to be a sign of toleration. We want this bench to be sign to bullies that we are not going to allow it at our school. We want this bench to be a sign of friendship. We are a school of caring individuals, and we want everyone that walks through our doors to know it. We want them to know we will be there for them in their time of need. We will be their friend!
