My school is in the center of Kentucky, which was once surrounded by bustling factories where generations of families worked. Now, with many of them closed, our families often struggle to find employment and opportunity. My students consistently come from homes that lack reading materials and our schools are separated by race.
I desire to share a novel that shows both the history of civil rights and how students can work together to show the rest of the world how to become friends and coworkers, regardless of race.
This novel further shows students that they must realize that we still have work to do to realize what we can accomplish together.
My Project
These novels will help students realize that race should never play a role in friendship. It also will show that students must make their own decisions about who to befriend, regardless of how others might feel.
Students will read about young people their age who struggle and overcome racism in their own families to create a lifetime bond that draws both families to change their own way of thinking and acting toward others.
I want my students to develop knowledge of their own history and the power to change the way they pick their friends now and in the future.
