This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are imaginative, inquisitive, and resilient. They are caring, creative, and love learning, exploring, and investigating. I see their eyes light up when I am able to teach them how to make something they are interested in. Even something as simple as teaching them how to draw their own hairstyle rather than a generic gendered hairdo allows them to feel noticed and feel unique.
They excitedly chatter about their artmaking processes and successes and help each other learn when I give them the freedom to experiment with mixing paint.
My students are enthusiastic when they get to share and explain their artwork to the rest of the class. I teach at a Title I school in North College Hill, Ohio.
My Project
This year, 498 of our students have successfully learned how to weave a basic "tabby" weaving pattern. To encourage my students to continue developing their weaving skills, I'd like to make a Friendly Loom available to them in our fiber arts center on an ongoing basis.
Friendly Looms are large enough to allow up to 6 students to weave at one time, which would be a great opportunity for my students to teach and learn from each other and try out new techniques.
This project also includes chunky yarns to make it easy for younger students and students with limited fine motor skills to maneuver the fiber through the loom, as well as some wool roving that be incorporated into the weaving or used for soap felting projects.
