Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Moderate to Severe Special Day Class that services students whose diagnoses require special feedings, medications, monitoring techniques and more. They face challenges everyday that pose significant threats to their health. By having these items, we can better ensure their health and safety.
The students in our Special Day Class are nothing short of AMAZING!
They work hard every day to achieve their goals and are very motivated to learn. There are several distractions that they have, such as medications, feedings, etc., but they continue to work hard nonetheless. They work well with their typically developing peers and do their best in school. Many of our students have diagnoses that affect their health and their learning. Many are on medications, have very specific feeding instructions, and have very serious health conditions. However, they do not let that stop them! We need to continue to motivate them and be there to support them in their successes!
My Project
Our daily routine consists of several health checks, following medical protocols, and fulfilling procedures that are required by the student and their specific diagnosis. In the midst of doing academics and these medical procedures, we also have to monitor their supplies. Many of our students are on specific diets that require a cool environment, such as formulas and medications. It is important to have a safe place for these types of things so that they can be used efficiently. The refrigerator will serve to keep things, such as the formulas and medications, chilled. The pulse oximeter will ensure our ability to monitor their heart rate and blood levels to provide the necessary care and attention our students need. The thermometer will help us monitor health and safety of the students in our class by making sure they are feeling well. Many of our students also do not have a form of communication to let us know when something is wrong, so these devices are extremely important to us.
These devices will help us be more efficient at responding to the medical and health needs of our students.
Many of them do not communicate verbally or non-verbally; these devices could be the voice they need to get help. Also, the refrigerator would ensure the safety of their medications and special diet foods that need refrigeration. Our students' needs would be responded to more efficiently and their medical needs will be met so learning can occur.
