My students need immediate access to technology in the classroom to become great twenty-first century learners who can navigate our ever-advancing technological world and communicate effectively throughout their high school years and thereafter.
My students are 9th graders in an urban high school, and because they are 9th graders, they are housed in a separate building next to the main high school. The freshmen academy is in an old building that, over decades, has been used as an elementary school, magnet school, and now a part of a high school. The building has not been updated in decades; however, through various grants and other projects, some classrooms do have technological updates like Smart Board technology and large flat screens for presentations and such. The academy houses close to 900 students. Our entire district is provided with free breakfast and lunch, and students either walk to school or use public transportation. Our students transition to the high school from over ten different elementary/middle schools. We are extremely diverse; our student population is comprised of over 60 different nationalities/ethnicities. Our students have great potential, but need much support from faculty and staff in order to find value and success in school. We are a great community!
My Project
Laptops would enhance my students' classroom experience in English Language Arts. Currently, most of my students have no or limited access to technology in their homes; therefore, I would create a "laptop center" in my classroom for students to access in class or during the day in order to complete assignments since we ask our students to access and use Google Apps. Aside from daily access, the laptop technology would allow my students to tackle different tasks during class instruction by rotating through "work centers," and one center would be the "tech center" where students will participate in online discussions and blogs, create multi-media projects, explore alternative media sources to increase comprehension, edit and revise writing assignment, access online webquests, engage grammar and reading programs - like IXL, Listenwise and NewELA - and conduct research on a variety of topics to bridge the knowledge gap between my students' prior knowledge and new information to enhance their skills to become effective communicators to forge positive relationships in school, home, and work.
