My students are amazing, hardworking children from very different backgrounds. Some of the children are from military families and have traveled the world. Others are from local families who have never left their own neighborhood. 68% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. 49% are African-American, 48% White, 2% Latino and 1% other ethnicities. We are a Title I school in a suburban setting with a large military population. Our school has the highest mobility rate of any in the county with 13% of the population transferring in and out during any given school year. A large number of our students are with us for part of one year, then at another Title I school, then back to us for a period of time over and over again.
Before the school shutdown in March, we loaded our students up with Library Books.
When we finally return, the last thing we want to worry about is tracking down books that have been home for months.
My Project
On March 13th we were told to pack up and go home for the next two weeks. Maryland schools were given their first taste of what the Covid-19 pandemic would mean. Before the students left, my assistant and I had every student in the school come to the Media Center to check out two, three or more books to see them through, what we hoped, would be two or three weeks. Well, It is April 27th our first projected return date, and we are out for at least two more weeks. Some of the students have no books except the ones we sent home. The last thing we are worried about are books that may or may not be returned.
Help us give the students a fresh start with some new books.
They love to read and we love to provide them with interesting stories that encourage them to read more.
