Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious and creative thinkers. They have an amazing positive attitude for learning. I am most proud of their ability to persevere despite the challenges they face.
My young learners are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
My class is comprised of students that are differently abled and English language learners.
Our Second grade class is a mix of high performers and special education students, but all have untapped talent and curiosity. Having worked with some for a few years now, I’ve been witness to a group that loves being challenged with new material and hoping some donors will help move them further along in satisfying their curiosity , and desire to learn.
The school is a Bi-Lingual and Bi-Cultural school based in upper Manhattan in NYC. Some of the kids hear Spanish primarily at home but all are developing strong English language skills. The more they read, the more those skills will be reinforced and and expanded.
My Project
I am looking for support for fiction books and nonfiction books that will both hone their skills at the right level but also can become good subjects for discussion. These books will reinforce and expand our core curriculum, and contain continued visual supports for our English Language learners.
The current supply of books is somewhat used and tattered, and the kids understanding that people are investing in them will bring them great joy.
The school is a Bi-Lingual and Bi-Cultural school based in East Harlem in NYC. Some of the kids hear Spanish primarily at home but all are developing strong English language skills. The more they read, the more those skills will be reinforced and expanded.
I am also asking for individual cushy seats and a small group horse shoe table. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
