My students need a French Horn to supplement our supply of school owned instruments. Due to our limited budget, we are unable to provide this instrument for students.
Meghan Trainor may be "all about that bass, no treble," but our band is very much treble with minimal bass or the very important alto voice. In addition to the saxophones, the French Horn helps to provide that missing middle voice to the overall sound of the band.
Our music students are very passionate about what they do.
They love coming to band and making music with each other. We have had several students express interest in switching instruments to help out the band. Many of our students, however, come from low income families and asking them to purchase a new instrument would not be possible.
Our schools also supply us with a very limited budget for instruments, one which is inadequate to purchase school owned instruments.
My Project
The sound of a concert band is often compared to a pyramid. The high pitched instruments are at the top while the low pitched instruments are at the bottom. The French Horn falls in the middle. Imagine trying to build a pyramid with a giant hole in the middle! It just does not work.
The French Horn will be used by the middle school band to help fill out the ensembles, thus creating the much needed "middle of the pyramid." Having these will allow students to participate that, due to their families financial situations, may not have been able to otherwise.
Students will learn how to perform music with an ensemble, developing their musical literacy, listening skills, and teamwork.
As mentioned earlier, a supply of school owned instruments will allow students to join band who may not have been able to due to their families' financial situations.
A school band is much like a second family to many of these students and can have an enormous positive impact on their lives. In many cases in a community such as ours, the students need the band even more than the band needs them.
