Many of my students are intellectually curious and have asked to read authentic French materials. Located in English and Spanish-speaking California, the students do not readily have access to such materials in their immediate environment. Moreover, their families do not have the resources to purchase such materials given their socio-economic status.
Engaging in weekly silent sustained reading will support their power of choice for pleasure reading, as well as build comprehension of supplemental vocabulary, grammar, and complex sentence structures in a more natural way.
With these books, my students will be able to engage in print-rich text (as well as unplug from their electronic devices for a few moments) for the joy of reading. Through these self-selected texts, my students will build high-interest vocabulary while further understanding it in a context-embedded way. Texts have been chosen at a variety of lexile levels so that students may choose books that comfortable meet their current reading level. Exposing students to this comprehensible input should simultaneously boost their writing capabilities as ingrained sentence structures from their reading are replicated via in-class quick writes about their stories and in presentational writing projects.
