This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a librarian in an inner-city elementary school, in which over 93 percent of our students are at or below the poverty level, and books for pleasure are not readily available in most of the homes.
The only place most of my students can find books to read for enjoyment is our school library. The public library is too far away and not a safe walk. Books for pleasure are considered a luxury in many of the homes. This library perhaps is the only place where we can inspire our non-readers and their families to become readers. Visualization is very important in comprehending and enjoying literature. Many of our children, from homes where English is a second language, have trouble visualizing the text so it is hard for them to enjoy books.
I want to use the camera and kit to inspire children to read. For this project, students will practice visualization of text, by staging and photographing scenes from the books. We will use the camera to photograph students, teachers, family and community members caught reading. The pictures will be displayed where all can see them. The camera will also be used to photograph scenes from books.
You help will make it possible for my students to become life-long readers, which, in turn, will help them have better lives.
