My students need 15 copies of "The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them", 15 composition books, and a Freedom Writers Teacher's Guide.
I teach history to students with special needs at the high school level. My students are working on earning a diploma and some are planning for college.
We have an excellent textbook; however, we need additional supplemental materials to enhance our learning. These history students have asked me to incorporate "Freedom Writers" into the curriculum. Many of them have seen the film and they want to learn more about the teacher and her at-risk inner city students.
This is a teachable moment.
I am currently utilizing the excellent school textbook, historical videos, and related materials to cover the standards. The "Freedom Writers" program was designed for students just like mine. They want to learn about the world and need lessons which they can relate to personally or they will lose interest.
It is said that the more you write the better you write. The "Freedom Writers" program emphasizes daily journaling. I have requested composition books which provide half a page for writing and half for drawing. Many of these students have personal baggage which they need to unload before they can concentrate on the immediate lesson. With this program I can truly support them.
My students have taken a risk in asking for something personally significant in their curriculum. I want to respond to their request and need your help.
