Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are curious, creative, and eager to learn! Students are especially skilled in communication and collaboration, always willing to share ideas and work together to find solutions to problems. Our school has a strong sense of community, and many students walk to school and play with each other after school hours. Students at my school are great friends, they help each other and treasure the time they spend learning together.
Our students feel a sense of community at school and work together to achieve academic and personal success.
My school is a Title I multilingual school. Students work extremely hard to learn, not just two, but three languages! Students are fluent in English, Spanish, and practice the basics of Mandarin. Roughly 70% of our students are English language learners. As teachers, we want to make sure that our students not only learn core standards and multiple languages, but also learn the 21st century skills they need to be successful in their continuing education and future careers. Competence in the STEAM areas are necessary to be competitive in our fast-paced world, and our students need your help to get there.
My Project
Do you remember being confined to your seat and totally uncomfortable at school? I do! And, I remember how hard it was to focus when all I wanted to do was get up and move. Just like adults, it' so hard for students to focus on their work if they are not comfortable. There are so many benefits to having standing desks in the classrooms other than comfort. These desks will create a space where students can gather to collaborate for group work. They will also be used during teacher led lessons, students will be able to move to the standing desk when they feel they need to stand or move around. Students with ADD will especially benefit from the use of these desks as they may need to move their bodies as a way to help them focus. These desks already have a home and will be used constantly in many different ways.
Standing desks will allow students the freedom to move and provide choices in how and where students work.
Flexible seating supports every student in the classroom and creates a student centered environment. I envision a classroom where students are sitting, standing, and laying down working in a way that feels right for them!
